What to Wear for a Marrakech Balloon Ride

Travelers dressed for an early morning hot air balloon flight near Marrakech

A hot air balloon flight starts earlier and cooler than most of your Marrakech itinerary, and being dressed for it makes a real difference to how comfortable the morning feels.

Layers matter more than any single item

Mornings in the Marrakech countryside can be noticeably cooler than the afternoon heat the city is known for, particularly outside summer. The most reliable approach is layering: a light jacket or fleece over a t-shirt or long-sleeve top, so you can remove a layer once the sun is up and the flight is underway.

Footwear

Launch and landing sites are open countryside, not paved terrain, so closed, comfortable shoes — trainers or light hiking shoes — are a better choice than sandals. You may be standing on uneven ground during setup and landing.

What to bring in your pockets, not a bag

Baskets are compact, so it’s worth keeping loose items to a minimum:

  • A phone or small camera for photos
  • Sunglasses — the light can be strong once the sun rises
  • A light hat, particularly outside the cooler months

Bulkier bags are best left with your transportation rather than carried into the balloon basket itself.

Sun protection, even in the morning

Because the flight often continues as the sun rises, sunscreen is worth applying before you leave your hotel, even if the start of the morning feels cool.

What not to worry about

You don’t need specialized outdoor gear for a Marrakech balloon flight — this isn’t a technical activity. Comfortable, weather-appropriate layers and closed shoes cover the essentials.
